The Mira Lanza is a point of flux, in need of an intervention to bring interest, people, and new life to the region. The site sat neglected and abandoned for several decades, but by using the surrounding morphology to its advantage and breaking down the existing barriers, it can engage the community it inhabits and expand the program to more people than ever.
The Fracture uses a business innovation center as an anchor in conjunction with Roma Tre University to create a campus for creativity, and then spreads that point along a bent axis from Marconi down to the Tiber River. The axis becomes a lively and experiential park for leisure, while serving the purpose of connecting the various points of the site together. Along the Fracture there is a Museum of Industry, inhabiting the old buildings of the Mira Lanza Soap Factory, as well as a collaboration center with large classroom spaces.
Beyond the Innovation Hub there is also an extension to the famous Teatro India, giving the buildings more interior space for exhibits, technical support, and backstage program. The bent axis terminates at a series of terraces and ramps that lead visitor down to the Tiber, aimed directly at the sites main landmark – The Gazometer. These ramps also allow direct and swift axis for bikers on the very popular Tiber Trail to get into the site and up into Marconi, opening the possibility to many for Commute by Bike to the City Center of Roma.
